Extinction is Forever

Can you imagine a world in which there are no more living apes? A world in which humans have annihilated their nearest relatives in the animal world? No more gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, or bonobos?

This is what’s coming unless we take decisive action now. In West and Central Africa, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos are being slaughtered for bushmeat; while in Indonesia, orangutans are losing their habitat at an alarming rate to illegal logging and burning of forests.

Canada is a long way from the tropics where these apes live, but in this interdependent world, they are vitally and legitimately our concern also.

We would be impoverished if these animals were allowed to disappear. For us, and our children, the world would be an immeasurably poorer, emptier place.

The Canadian Ape Alliance

The Canadian Ape Alliance was founded by Dr. Kerry Bowman and colleagues as part of a Canadian response to save the apes. The Canadian Ape Alliance works to:

  • raise awareness in Canada and abroad of the imminent threats to the great apes
  • take action to protect them

Please consider joining us in the vital cause of protecting the great apes.

PROJECTS...

A School for Gorilla Protection!

The largest remaining population of eastern lowland gorillas is surviving today thanks to the protection provided by the guards of Kahuzi-Biega Park. Supporting the guards has been a major priority. Our biggest current project is building a school for their children, who most probably will become the guards of tomorrow. MORE...

The Canadian Ape Alliance, with help from the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise, have established a cassava-grinding mill for the families of the guards at Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mill will be used to grind cassava, corn and soybeans for resale as flour, providing much-needed income and saving the women the backbreaking task of carrying sacks of cassava up to 12 kilometres on dirt roads to have it ground into flour.
