Dr. Bowman was in Africa for a month working on programs.
A great deal of data related to attitudes toward the
great apes, the natural world and human need, has
been gathered by Wendy Elliott, a volunteer with Cameroon
Wildlife Aid Fund and The Gorilla Foundation. Dr.
Bowman will be analyzing this data, to better understand
the perspective and needs of Cameroonians and develop
conservation initiatives which are reflective of their
opinions and needs. The data is particularly useful
because it is from people of all ages, from different
tribal groups and from rural and urban settings. The
environmental education programs in the elementary
and high schools has also been expanded.

| May 2001 |
We had our Spring fundraiser on May 24, 2001, in
Seeley Hall at Trinity College in Toronto. It was
a great success, and thanks to all who attended. And
a special thanks to the artists who donated artwork.
At the end of May we finally moved to our own dedicated
web host for our great-apes.com domain.
Also, earlier this month, Dr. Bowman and one of his
research assistants, Zinta Zommers, presented their
material at the Great
Apes at the Threshold Conference in Boston.

gibbons -- in their natural habitat. The House of
Representatives overwhelmingly passed HR 4320 in late
July, and the legislation now heads to President Clinton,
who is expected to sign it.

| African Monkey
Pronounced Extinct Scientists have pronounced
a type of large West African monkey extinct, making
it the first primate to vanish in the 20th century.
Anthropologists for the Wildlife Conservation Society
in New York failed to find the monkey, a Miss Waldron's
Red Colobus, in a six-year series of forest surveys
in Ghana and Ivory Coast that ended in 1999.
