The Bushmeat Crisis & GIS Technology

Canadian Ape Alliance
Digital Mapping & Analysis
in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Technology Defined

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology can supply a powerful, flexible and portable research tool for small conservation groups in the field. Data collection, storage, and analysis is streamlined with a common connection being ‘geography’, or spatial characteristic.

When combined with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology in the field, the researcher becomes empowered with assigning highly accurate geographic coordinates to any spatial data within the GIS.

CAA GIS Project Objectives
Sharing a common philosophy of respecting human and wildlife requirements, Canadian Ape Alliance GIS project objectives will reflect the need to incorporate information from disparate sources to reveal inter-related factors and relationships.

Through close collaboration and partnerships with conservation organizations and individuals, it is predicted that a variety of small to large-scale GPS/GIS programs will collectively add current and detailed digital map data that can be utilized for multiple purposes. A solid foundation of GIS data will provide programs with an ever-increasing detailed profile of subject areas, spawning innovative and creative angles to help secure the future of Africans and African wildlife in the region.

Specific programs that are proposed:

  • Provide field support for wildlife survey teams on the ground with GPS, GIS and Remote Sensing data and technology
  • Mapping dynamic changes in vegetation affecting habitat
  • Mapping reforestation efforts
  • Mapping direct and indirect evidence of bushmeat hunting activities
  • Establish a community-based and owned GIS research tool that can adapt and evolve over time to specific programs on a local level
  • Establish a strong technical support network through professional GIS volunteers (on-the-ground and overseas) and continue to support efforts through software, hardware and peripheral equipment donations
  • Raise public awareness of the current global bushmeat market via online technology and public outreach at the local, national and international level
CAA GIS Project Supporters:

Recognizing the enormous research and educative potential of computer mapping technology in conservation programs, the team has been generously supported by GIS and GPS industry leaders through generous donations and technical support.

The Canadian Ape Alliance GIS Project would like to express their sincere thanks to the following organizations whose dedication and support for conservation worldwide has made this project possible:
